1. 2014-2015 Honda Pilot

Honda is known to be a car manufacturer that makes durable and built-to-last cars in Canada. A good example is its older model, the Honda Pilot, which is one of the best-used SUVs under $20,000.

The 2014-2015 Honda Pilot uses the 3.5L V6 engine, the same engine as the 2023 model, and boasts a performance of 250 HP, perfect for daily commutes. Above all, the most lovable thing about this model is its spacious interior, which can fit up to eight passengers.

On AutoTrader.ca, the most recognized used cars website, the 2014 version of the Honda Pilot can be bought for under $20,000. At the same time, VMR Canada listed the 2015 Honda Pilot at a price range of $12,400 to $15,950, depending on the mileage and features.

2. 2015-2016 Toyota RAV4

Toyota has focused on creating durable cars, evident in their stylish and feature-rich Toyota Rav4. The Toyota Rav4 has long been a choice among Canadians as a compact SUV, and the 2015-2016 models offer great value for used car buyers.

Despite its size, the Rav4 provides a ride, impressive fuel efficiency, and generous cargo space. It also boasts technology features like Toyota Safety Sense and active cruise control. When it comes to used crossovers, the Rav4 ticks all the boxes.

I recently found a 2015 RAV4 LE on CarGurus in Brampton, Ontario, that has only clocked 97,000 km. It was listed for $16,998. At AutoTrader.ca, the price range for this model is $15,995-$16,950.

3. 2018 – 2022 Kia Niro

If your taste is in hybrid compact SUVs that won’t break the bank, Kia Niro from 2018 to 2022 will surely give you satisfaction! Even if it was released years ago, driving a second-hand Kia Niro feels like new – given its excellent fuel efficiency, decent interior space, and advanced features.

We found a 2018 Niro L FWD on CarGurus in Guelph, Ontario. It had 156,000 km on it and was listed for $18,000. For a five-year-old crossover in this condition, that’s a great price. At AutoTrader, the model is being sold for $18,000-$20,000.

4. 2008-2013 Toyota Highlander

If you’re in Canada and looking for a family SUV, check out the Highlander. The Toyota Highlander from 2008 to 2013 is highly recommended as one of the best-used SUVs under $20,000 for Canadian families.

Its reputation for being incredibly reliable gives you peace of mind with mileage. The V6 engine offers an amount of power while still maintaining decent fuel efficiency.

I recently came across a 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport 4WD on AutoTrader in Hamilton with a price tag of $13,495 with around 175,000 km on it. At Autotrader.ca, you can find this model being sold in the range of $6,995-$20,000.

If you’re looking for something more, a newer model and top trim option are available; the 2013 Toyota Highlander Premium AWD, with features like a sunroof, leather seats, and navigation system, is priced closer to $20,000. Though it’s at least 15 years old now, the interior and exterior of this SUV are in excellent condition.

5. 2014-2015 Mercedes GLK

The Mercedes Benz GLK, from 2014 to 2015, remains one of the sweet choices for buyers seeking a luxury second-hand SUV in Canada.

It offers high-quality materials, ample legroom, and excellent safety ratings. What sets this Mercedes model apart is its all-wheel drive (AWD) system, which provides a light and refined handling experience that makes navigating through winter or running through various terrains too easy.

Opting for a Mercedes GLK allows you to enjoy prestige without breaking the bank. I recently came across a 2014 GLK listed on AutoTrader in Scarborough, Ontario, with prices ranging as low as $15,000 and averaging around $17,000.

These vehicles have accumulated over 100,000 km on the odometer, which is relatively low mileage for a car that’s been around for about a decade.

When you go to Autotrader.ca, there are several of these in the $11,500-$20,000 price range.

6. 2016 Chevrolet Equinox

The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox is an all-around 5-seater compact SUV with flexible space, making it one of the best-used SUVs under $20,000.

Aside from being spacious, Equinox has been known to give you the smoothest and most comfortable ride due to the regulated suspension and vehicle chassis, and few report issues even at high mileage. It is gasoline-powered and has a fair fuel efficiency of 9.1L/100 km.

On AutoTrader.ca, Chevrolet Equinox prices vary wildly and don’t base the price on the trim levels. Lower trim levels at LS & LT are priced at around $17,000, while the higher trim levels at LTZ are approximately $16,000.

On the AutoTrader website, you’ll also find listings in the $12,500-$19,995 price range.

7. 2016-2020 Kia Sorento

From the 2016 to 2020 models, the Kia Sorento is impressively timeless in its appearance. Not only does it boast looks, but its spacious three-row mid-size SUV, advanced safety features like blind spot detection and forward collision warning, and impressive engine performance make it even more captivating.

For instance, on AutoTrader.ca, you can find a deal on a 2016 Kia Sorento, priced at less than $20,000 and has a mileage of less than 120,000 km.

Best Used SUVs Under $15,000

8. 2009-2013 Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester is considered one of the best-used SUVs under $10,000 or $15,000. It stands out for its top-notch safety features, all-wheel drive (AWD) that allows for maneuvering on terrains, advanced technology, fuel efficiency, and, most importantly, affordability.

Surprisingly, AutoTrader.ca shows price listings that are hard to believe! Every model listed is priced below $15,000 regardless of the trim level and mileage. You can even find a 2010 Subaru Forester X Touring, with 180,000 miles for $6,000.

9. 2011-2015 Nissan Juke

The Nissan Juke may look slightly smaller than other compact SUVs, but it’s surprisingly one of the best-used SUVs in Canada under $15,000 out there! You’ll love its unique design, sporty style, sporty-fun driving experience, and average 7.61L/100km fuel efficiency.

You’ll be shocked how most of the listed 2011 to 2015 models of the Nissan Juke are consistently priced under $15,000 on Cargurus.ca. You can find 2011 models with less than 180,000 km priced at $6,000-$9,000 and 2013 models with around 120,000 km being sold for less than $12,000.

Inspect the units thoroughly, especially the typical problems of Nissan Juke, like the suspension, transmission, and turbocharger.

10. 2010-2013 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback, from 2010 to 2013, holds a place in the hearts of Canadians due to its performance in snowy conditions with Subaru’s symmetrical AWD. Its big interior offers carrying all your gear, while the augmented suspension permits off-road experiences without worrying about grazing the ground.

The fuel-efficient four engines and Subaru’s renowned reliability ensure that this wagon will keep running indefinitely. When it comes to a versatile used wagon that can handle anything, it’s hard to beat the Outback.

Check out this find: a 2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i Sport listed in Scarborough, Ontario. It has already covered 200,000 kilometres and is priced at $8,995.

The limited version commands prices, with the 2010 model averaging around $11,500 and the 2011 model at approximately $12,000. Despite being for around 13 years, this vehicle looks incredibly well-maintained.

11. 2007 – 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe

If you’re looking for a second-hand SUV with a luxurious cabin, sizable legroom on the second and third rows, and still equipped with state-of-the-art technology, consider the family-friendly Chevrolet Tahoe from 2007 to 2014. Surprisingly, this big SUV is priced under $15,000 given its reputation of long and reliable service and built-to-last.

For instance, AutoTrader.ca prices a third generation of the Tahoe 4WD LT in 2007 in premium condition at a resale value ranging from $10,00 to $15,000, depending on mileage.

The mileage of these cars ranges typically from 200,000 to 300,000 kilometres, but they are safety-certified and serviced regularly. Regarding fuel, it can still work at a combined fuel economy of 13.9L for every 100 km.

From a pricing and features standpoint, the Chevrolet Tahoe is one of the best-used SUVs under $15,000 in Canada.

12. 2014 – 2016 Jeep Cherokee

The Cherokee received a revamp in 2014 and boasted impressive technology, including a backup camera. Typically these models, from 6 to 9 years old, have mileage ranging from 80,000 to 150,000 miles, depending on the driving habits of the previous owners.

If you’re looking for a Latitude or Limited trim in condition, you can expect to pay around $15,000 to $22,000. Reviewing the service records is advisable as consumer reports suggest that reliability for these model years is average. However, with maintenance, this used SUV can be competent.

How to Choose the Best Used SUV in Canada

It’s essential to consider a few things to choose the best-used SUVs in Canada. These tips will help you find a vehicle that suits your needs and budget.

  • Start by considering your SUV’s size based on how many passengers you’ll transport daily and how many things you’ll load. Also, consider if you’ll need third-row seating because some compact SUVs are utilized for cabin spaces.
  • Remember that SUVs consume more fuel than sedans, so it’s crucial to consider their fuel economy. Experts say that a good fuel economy is around 23 MPG. If you can test drive the used car, fill up the tank, drive it for certain kilometres, and determine the gas consumed.
  • We want to avoid unexpected repairs and problems, especially when they are major ones, as they are costly and very time-consuming. Always take the time to research reliability ratings thoroughly.
  • Make a list of must-have features like all-wheel drive, anti-lock braking, airbags, heated seats, higher ground clearance, or third-row seating based on what matters to you.
  • Establish your budget and explore options within your price range. You must determine if you’re opting for a used car under $20,000, $15,000, $10,000, or even $5,000 in Canada. Yes, there are a few below $5,000.
  • Although the Canadian car dealer claims to have a completely no-issue second-hand SUV, it is still vital to do your inspection and judgment based on documents and manual checking. When checking out second-hand SUVs, read all maintenance records carefully, obtain a CARFAX history report, take an extensive test drive if allowed, and have an experienced mechanic inspect it.
  • Remember to verify safety ratings from IIHS as well. Conducting this diligence will help uncover any issues and provide you with some leverage during negotiations.
