Canadian Tire rebranded its loyalty program last year with the introduction of Triangle Rewards and two main credit cards – the Triangle Mastercard and Triangle World Elite Mastercard.

While Canadian Tire Money remains the currency for the new Triangle Rewards program, you can now earn rewards faster and redeem them at more places than before.

The Triangle World Elite Mastercard is one of only a few credit cards to offer free roadside assistance and it makes it to my list of the best no-fee cash back cards in Canada.

Triangle Rewards Program

Canadian Tire’s Triangle Rewards program makes it easier to earn and redeem your Canadian Tire Money at several popular retailers including:

  • Canadian Tire
  • SportChek
  • Mark’s/L’Equipeur
  • Atmosphere
  • Gas+

You can easily collect the e-Canadian Tire Money (CT Money) using the Canadian Tire (Triangle) mobile app or rewards card and paying with any credit card, debit, or cash (except for Gas+ purchases). For even more CT Money, pay with a Triangle credit card (more on this below).

Benefits of the Triangle Rewards program are:

  • Exclusive CT Money earning opportunities through personalized offers
  • No receipt returns
  • Collect 3-4.5 cents per litre in CT Money at Gas+ locations when you pay with debit or cash

Triangle World Elite Mastercard

The Triangle World Elite Mastercard is a no-annual-fee card with lots of great benefits.

  • No annual fee
  • 4% cash back (CT Money) when you shop at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s/L’Equipeur, and Atmosphere stores
  • 3% in CT Money when you spend on groceries (up to $12,000 per year and excluding Costco and Walmart
  • 1% CT Money on all other purchases
  • Earn up to 7 cents per litre when you purchase fuel at Gas+ and participating Husky stations
  • Free roadside assistance (Gold Plan)
  • No fee, no interest financing on purchases of $200 or more for up to 24 months
  • Car rental collision/loss damage waiver insurance
  • Purchase security and extended warranty

The Triangle World Elite saves me more than $100 (including taxes) per year with their free Gold Plan roadside assistance which offers either a vehicle plan (service to one specific vehicle) or a member plan (coverage for any vehicle you are in).

The roadside assistance includes:

  • 24-hour service across Canada and the U.S. for towing, fuel and delivery, flat tire changes, battery boost, lock-out service, and extrication/winching.
  • 5 service calls of up to 250 km and unlimited tows to any Canadian Tire Auto Service centre within your towing limits

You can simply discontinue your CAA membership with this card. The 4% earn rate on purchases made at participating stores and 3% on grocery purchases is pretty sweet, especially when you consider that this card has no annual fee.

We do most of our grocery shopping at the Superstore using the PC Financial World Elite Mastercard, so the fact that Walmart and Costco grocery purchases do not qualify does not matter much to us.

The bonus of 5 cents per litre on regular and mid-grade fuel, or 7 cents per litre on premium gas when you fill up at Gas+ is also worth noting.

Note that you need a minimum personal income of $80,000 per year to be eligible for this card.

Triangle World Elite Mastercard

Triangle Mastercard

The Triangle Mastercard is the entry-level credit card offered by Canadian Tire and has no annual fee. It offers:

  • 4% back in CT Money (Triangle Rewards) when you shop at Canadian Tire, SportChek, Mark’s, and Atmosphere
  • 5 cents per litre when you buy gas at Gas+ or participating Husky stations
  • No fee, no interest financing on purchases of $250 or more for up to 24 months
  • 0.8% back in CT Money on all other purchases

Canadian Tire Financial Services also has a Triangle World Mastercard that offers 4% in CT Money on purchases at participating stores, up to 7 cents per litre on gas, and three different types of insurance coverage. This card is available by invitation-only.

Is the Triangle World Elite Mastercard Worth It?

My review of the Triangle World Elite Mastercard is positive. I particularly like that it saves me the cost of a CAA membership ($100 plus tax) every year and I can earn 4% in CT Money when I shop at Canadian Tire and Sport Chek.

Returns to participating stores are much easier since a receipt is no longer required. So, if you shop regularly at Canadian Tire and their affiliated stores, this card is a must-have.

A few downsides to the card include their exclusion of Walmart and Costco from the list of grocery stores from which you can earn 3% in rewards. Also, you need a high personal income of $80,000 or $150,000 in household income to qualify for the card.

If you do not meet the income eligibility, you can consider going for the Triangle Mastercard or look at excellent no-fee cash back cards like the Tangerine 2% Money-Back credit card or SimplyCash Card from American Express.

Another card that offers roadside assistance and has no annual fees is the Home Trust Preferred Visa.

  1. does anyone know what the minimum credit limit is on a Triangle World Elite Mastercard?

  2. I initially had a credit limit of $20,000. I also had several other cards with similar lines. After recieving a letter to use it or lose it, I called and they said I can make even a small purchase to keep the card active. I never heard of that before but OK, so I did. After that, they have every six months steadily decreased my limit from 20,000 to 15,000 to 10,000 to 5,000 and now $3,000. When I initially called about why they decreased my limit when I used the card, they were suddenly rude for no reason, irrate, and claimed that they can do what ever they want out of hte blue. It was a very strange call and my limits went down every six months ever since.

Anyways, in short this card stinks. I am going to cancel it.
