How Does Rakuten Work?

The Rakuten website or app is easy to use. To earn cash back, simply:

  • Visit Rakuten (Canada or the United States) and sign up. It takes less than 3 minutes and it is free to join.
  • Whenever you need to make a purchase online, start at Rakuten to find your favourite store and click to proceed to their website.
  • Shop as usual and Rakuten will automatically credit your account with cash back.
  • For even more money in your pocket, share your referral link or code with your friends and get up to a $30 cash bonus per friend who signs up for Rakuten.
  • Cash out your earnings via check in the mail or by PayPal.

People often forget to shop using Rakuten and hence do not maximize their potential cash back earnings. This is why Rakuten introduced their browser extension which you can install on Google Chrome.

Whenever you are making purchases online, the Rakuten Cash Back Button will remind you to activate cash back offers with a single click.

Rakuten $30 Sign-Up Bonus

Rakuten pays a $5 to $30 bonus when you sign up for a new account using a referral link or code. How much you get depends on where you are located and do your shopping.

For Canadians, sign up here and receive a $30 bonus. For residents of the U.S., sign up here to receive your $30 bonus. Make sure to sign up with the appropriate link and country where you will do your shopping.

Note: The sign-up process is credited to your account after you make your first purchase of at least $30 online using the Rakuten app or website within your first 30 days. It is free money and a bonus on top of the free discount or cash back you earn on your purchase!

Rakuten Referral Program Bonus

Rakuten has a very generous referral program that pays up to $30 per friend that joins Rakuten using your special link or code. This is an unlimited way to earn cash bonuses even when you are not shopping online.

In addition, your friend also receives a sign-up bonus too. WIN-WIN!

For both of you to qualify for the refer-a-friend bonus, the referral (new member) must make a qualifying purchase via their new Rakuten account of up to $30.

Swagbucks ($5 Bonus): This ‘get paid to’ site rewards you for shopping online, taking surveys, playing games, browsing the internet, watching videos, and more. They have paid members more than $595 million so far. Sign up for Swagbucks here to get a $5 bonus.

Caddle ($1 Bonus): This is a free cash back app in Canada that pays you to shop, complete surveys, and watch video ads. Sign up here to get started.

Ibotta: This is another popular cash back app that is worth joining. It is only available in the U.S (Android or iPhones). Check out my Ibotta review on Dollar Financials.
